FLORA AND FAUNA
hilean native temperate forests constitute a world biodiversity reserve, for possesing a biota extraordinary rich in endemisms.
The reserves’s flora is dominated by the Valdivian Forest type, mixed moist forest that counts with a large amount of varied species. The 84% is covered by forests from a very varied composition, in wich the ever-green trees predominate, like the Coigüe, Ulmo, Olivillo or Lingue. It also has conifers like Mañío and deciduous leaves trees, like Roble, Ñirre, Lenga and Raulí.
Huilo Huilo Forest is characterized for its richness species of ferns, funguses, bryophytes (mosses and hepaticas) and líquenes, which are an important part of the forest’s floor, and that also grow over treetrunks of old trees and over those which have fallen.
The natural isolation of the Valdivian Ecoregion, produced, during thousands of years, unique animals and plant species, that represent singular characteristics.
In Huilo Huilo, 81 birds species have been described. Among the endemic species, the Chucao, completely adaptated to live in the forest’s grounds. Other emblematic bird, is the Black Woodpecker, the biggest one of all chilean woodpeckers species.
Among the mammals that inhabit this wood, we found the world’s smallest deer, endemic in this kind of wood, the Pudú, with only 10 kg of weight and 40 cm high. Among the felines we found the Puma, Gato Montés and Güiña, one of the world’s smallest wild cat, which is seriously threatened.
You can also find the only representative of the marsupial familiy, the Monito del Monte , related to australian marsupials. Molecular-genetics studies, show its similarity with fossils species already extinguished. Its considered a living fossil representative of the first marsupials that inhabited South America.
Among the amphibious, one of the threatened species is the Sapito de Darwin ,an endemic species, that today its in vulnerable category according to UICN (International Union of Conservation of Nature).
