THE VINEYARD & VIK ICON WINE
The vineyard is located at Millahue Valley ( ‘Place of Gold’, as named by the indigenous people), among innumerable gorges, offerering a variety of unequaled terroir and small microclimates – each with distinct exposures and cooled by coastal breezes — giving it the complexity sought after, assuring VIK that they are on track to reach the objective of producing the best wine in South America.
The holistic wine is the result of the magnificent dynamic terroir together with viticultural and vinicultural best practices, excellence in environmental stewardship, development of human and social capital as well as architecture and the arts. VIK Icon Wine embodies the perfect fusion between man, experience, land, climate and the most advanced technology.
The property is 4,325 hectares (10,688 acres) comprising the end of the entire Millahue valley. VIK Lodge is perched on and covers a hilltop above a lake at the center of the vineyard with panoramic 360 degree views. The vineyard can be seen spreading into the many smaller valleys and weaving among numerous gorges and mountains. In the distance are the majestic Andes Mountains.
THE AREA & TERROIR
n 2004, Alexander Vik, a Norwegian entrepreneur, proposed the creation of a world-class vineyard to produce a unique wine. To find the best terroir, he undertook meticulous soil studies, analyses that covered all of South America.
The studies and the ongoing work in the vineyard and at the winery are led by Patrick Valette.
In 2006, Alexander Vik chose the best terroir with optimal climatic conditions for grape growing and purchases 4,325 hectares (10,688 acres) in Chile. The specific location chosen was the Millahue Valley, or “Place of Gold”, as named by the indigenous people, located on the north slope of Chile’s Apalta Valley.
The vineyard, or “Place of Gold”, is located in the interior of the valley among innumerable gorges, offerering a variety of unequaled terroir and small microclimates – each with distinct exposures and cooled by coastal breezes — giving it the complexity sought after, assuring that VIK is on track to reach the objective of producing the best wine in South America.
The great expanse of VIK’s vineyard and its unequaled attributes enable to create a unique wine with infinite quality, possible because of the meticulous attention to every detail that until now is only seen in the smallest vineyards. At VIK they make the perfect equation between great size (383 planted hectares) and excellence in quality that enables to deliver a Great Wine.
The ideal thermal amplitude at the vineyard is an advantage in the growing of top quality grapes. VIK benefits from consistently warm temperatures during the day and very cool nights. They are also fortunate to very rarely suffer from excessive heat, frost or hail. The exceptional luminosity and scarce periods of rain during growing and harvest season are very important in maintaining the freshness of the fruit while having mature tannins at the time of harvest. Viña VIK is a paradise for growing perfect grapes.
VIK includes twelve valleys with distinct types of soil, each analyzed to plant rootstock best suited for its characteristics. This variety and complexity helps them to create a unique and great wine.
Another fundamental point in the making of VIK wine is the special concern for striking the perfect balance between land, plant, rootstock and weather conditions. For this reason, each task is given great importance. Pruning and thinning is a constant concern at the vineyard. The pruning system reflects the proper balance in the load, in the phytosanitation, and simplicity in the operation.
Go To Top
At VIK, sustainable development is another one of its fundamental pillars that comes from their concern for the environment where its wine grows.
The design of Viña Vik has focused on minimizing the need for energy use by maximizing natural resources to heat, cool, ventilate and irrigate. The property operates in an environmentally-conscious manner through its extensive use of water collection and recycling, solar technologies, intelligent energy efficiency systems and green architecture.
Within the measures to mitigate, recover and improve, the following are highlighted:
Recovery of drained waters to irrigate the entire vineyard.
VIK’s negative carbon footprint is the result of the extensive forest on the land and having planted 590 trees such as quillay, peumo and litre.
VIK possesses incredible biodiversity where the living organisms are part of a whole with which they are constantly reciprocating, as well as with the air, water and soil that surround it.
The 303 planted hectares are surrounded by almost 2000 hectares of forest.
VIK has a perfect synergy and respect between man and nature which gives them their valued holistic VIK wine.
VIK Hacienda has a great diversity of wild animals (ducks, cormorants, swans, eagles, cougar, etc.) thanks to being geographically isolated in the interior of the valley with a lake in the middle of the vineyard.
The proximity of the forest to the vineyard encourages a healthy development of plants and a good balance of flora and fauna—(i.e. the spiders that are in the vineyard and predators in the forest).
VIK features its own water treatment plant, where the plants eat the bacterium, enabling us to use the water again to irrigate the vineyard.
VIK has four sustainably-managed sections without any chemical use which are La Cantera, Yerbas Buenas, Cerro La Higuera and Colchaguilla Alto.
The winery will be very efficient using free cooling, solar energy, natural insulation and geothermal energy.
